'AS Monaco' had a total of 4 figures released by corinthian,or was it 5?
The reason for the ambiguity is that 4 figures were released in single blister format, those 4 of course being-collins,di meco, anderson and henry.A 4 player pack was also released and you would assume it would be made up of the same 4 figures, well you would be wrong!
The 4 player pack consisted of the following figures-di meco, anderson, henry and......barthez?
Collins was not part of the 4 pack release, for reasons i am not completly sure of. Barthez was playing for Monaco at this time but the figure inside the 4 pack was of him painted in the french national kit and is exactly the same as the french national headliner figure.
My assumption is that either there were simply not enough of the collins figure to fill the 4 pack order,so Barthez was substituted for him,or that they planned to repaint Barthez into the Monaco kit but simply forgot to do it or it was demmed not viable to do so.
The reason is not exactly clear but as the Barthez figure is painted in the French national kit i personally do not class it as a Monaco figure,so only 4 Monaco figures were released.
Corinthian retired this controversial 4 pack on the 1st of February 2003.
The outstanding sculpt from this set is undoubtly the 'Thierry Henry' with his huge afro hairstyle and moustache, this figure was certainly not lacking 'va va voom.' The 'John Collins figure was a repaint of the 'Celtic' figure released as part of the 'SPL HEADLINERS' range, while the 'Sonny Anderson' and 'Eric Di Meco' were both first time original sculpts which have never been used again. Di Meco even sports a pony tail hairstyle, some what of a novelty for a corinthian figure.
All 4 Monaco figures are relativly easy to obtain and would not set you back more than £3 each with the 4 player pack selling for around the £15 mark.
